Rules for DNBK membership

Character & Skill: The dojo leader must be satisfied that the applicant possesses excellent character and proven skill in their art.
Training Requirement: Applicants must have a minimum of 3 years of continuous training.
Non-Dojo Members: If an applicant is not a member of your dojo, they must be a recognised dojo leader from another dojo.
No "Lone Members": An applicant cannot join DNBK if their dojo leader is not already a current DNBK member.
No "Loosely Associated Organisations": DNBK does not grant membership to umbrellas or federations of unrelated dojos; applications must come directly from individual traditional dojos.

Lone Member
Example: A DNBK member competes in Karate competitions, builds a network of 50 friends across 30 different dojos, and invites them to apply. If none of those applicants has dojo leadership authority or a DNBK-affiliated head, verifying credentials becomes an administrative problem. Requiring every member to link directly to a DNBK-affiliated dojo head ensures accountability and streamlined verification.

Loosely associated organisations
Example: An umbrella group named "Shogun Karate" consists of 50 independent dojos. "Shogun Karate" as a single entity cannot join DNBK, though its individual dojos may apply independently. DNBK operates through a traditional dojo structure where communications (such as official newsletters) are sent directly to permanent dojo heads. Elected leadership in umbrella organisations changes frequently, making their governance incompatible with DNBK's traditional structure.

Process

After your application has been processed you will receive an invoice for the membership plus a patch. New memberships are processed in early January each year. I usually receive a package in early March.

Before starting make sure you have scanned: a passport size photo of you, your last rank certificate, your "Working with Children Check" (or equivalent)
